The Education Advocacy Program of the Legal Aid Bureau represents students at long-term suspension hearings, including clients ranging from autistic Kindergarteners to parenting high school students, each with a unique story and individualized needs that are not being met by their schools or other service providers. Unjustly harsh, inappropriate or unsubstantiated disciplinary decisions are appealed to the Board of Education and New York State Commissioner of Education. In one appeal filed last year, the matter was quickly settled and the suspension expunged from the student’s record.
