The Legal Aid Bureau of Buffalo seeks to provide access to justice and due process to the most vulnerable individuals in the Western New York community through quality legal representation and assistance.

 DEFINITION: Under the guidance of the Controller, the Accountant engages in daily supervision of the Bookkeeper.  Other responsibilities include general ledger account reconciliations; preparation of selected funding vouchers and other related duties as required.

DUTIES:

  • Supervises and manages bookkeeper in the execution of their daily duties ensuring the bookkeeper has been given clear direction regarding the priority for completion of duties and has been sufficiently trained.  Provides regular feedback, coaching and discipline when necessary to the Bookkeeper.
  • Maintains equipment inventories and is responsible for assignment of asset tags.
  • Maintains records on client escrow, flexible spending account balances, employee receivables, and other accounts as requested by Chief Financial Officer and / or Controller.
  • Responsible for ensuring maintenance of general ledger, journals, and other financial records as support to Controller.
  • Prepares reports for Chief Financial Officer and Controller as needed for Board of Directors, Union negotiations, grant applications, etc.
  • Prepares monthly and quarterly reports and vouchers to funding sources, as needed.
  • Works closely with the Chief Financial Officer and Controller at fiscal year-end to prepare for the annual financial audit.
  • Assist in preparation of annual 1096 and 1099-NEC and 1099-MISC forms as required by Internal Revenue Service
  • Acts as backup to ensure bank deposits are recorded and that bank accounts are reconciled; checks are prepared properly for approved invoices; records of purchase orders are properly maintained; petty cash is reconciled; files and documents are retained as required for record-keeping and purged according to established procedures.
  • Acts as backup for preparation of accounts payable invoices for review and approval including following of various funding budgets for allowable expenses and creating expenses allocations.
  • Acts as backup to bookkeeper position for preparing payroll and maintaining related accounting, personnel and payroll records.
  • Complies with federal, state, and local requirements for preparing and filing financial reports.
  • Protects Legal Aid operations by keeping financial information, plans and employee information confidential.
  • Protects agency resources by ensuring compliance with funding and other contract agreements.
  • Locates files, invoices, and reports as requested by auditors and funding sources.
  • Performs related duties as required.

 

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS:

  • Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered four (4) year college or university with a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Business Administration or related field, including or supplemented by a minimum of twenty-four (24) semester credit hours in accounting, and two (2) years experience as a Bookkeeper or Accountant, or
  • An equivalent combination of training and experience.

     This position is full-time.

 Salary Range: $65,000 – $75,000, depending on experience
