The Legal Aid Bureau of Buffalo, Inc. is seeking a Controller to manage and direct the accounting operations for the organization conforming to GAAP including the supervision of accounting personnel. The Controller will provide advice and information regarding fiscal and financial matters to the Chief Financial Officer and Chief Executive Officer.

 Key Responsibilities: 

  • Supervises and manages accounting personnel in the execution of their daily duties ensuring they have been given clear direction regarding the priority for completion of duties and have been sufficiently trained.
  • Supervises and manages accounting personnel performance by providing regular feedback and coaching, and discipline when necessary.
  • Codes expenses for charge off to proper contracts and monitors contract expenses to remain within budgetary limits.
  • Reviews and approves all accounts payable invoices
  • Authorizes purchase orders within the scope of the Accounting Manual’s definitions
  • Reviews quarterly and other expense (reimbursement) vouchers for funding contracts and grants as prepared by the accounting team.
  • Initiates and approves requests for advances of funds, when contracts allow.
  • Reviews and approves bi-weekly payroll batches for accuracy, payment of payroll taxes and prepares all required tax reports (e.g. 941, NYS-45 and US Department of Labor Multiple Worksite Report)
  • Prepares and/or reviews journal entries for income and expenses which are nonrecurring
  • Responsible for monthly general ledger review and month-end close function including preparing financial statements
  • Review monthly bank reconciliation as prepared by Financial Analyst
  • Confers with CFO and other internal stakeholders on a regular basis to review fiscal matters.
  • Prepares materials (workpapers, schedules and data requests) for annual audit by CPA firm.
  • Confers with CFO, and other internal stakeholders to prepare budgets and/or review budgets prepared by other members of the accounting team.
  • Reviews equipment inventory for completeness and accuracy.
  • Confers with Communications and Development Manager and other internal stakeholders regarding donor drive, special events and other solicitations as well as funding opportunities.
  • Performs related duties as required.

 Employment Standards: 

  • Certified Public Accountant with bachelor’s degree.  M.B.A. preferred.
  • Excellent writing skills, including the ability to organize factual data into clear, logical sequences.
