BUFFALO, NY — After nearly four decades of dedicated service to advancing equal access to justice, David C. Schopp, Executive Director of the Legal Aid Bureau of Buffalo, is retiring. Schopp has been a pivotal figure since March 2000, leading the organization through significant growth and innovation, expanding the Bureau from 53 employees to over 170 and enhancing services within the Criminal Defense and Civil Legal Services Units.
Under Schopp’s leadership, the Bureau has been recognized for its commitment to client-centered representation and defender advocacy. His contributions have been acknowledged with multiple awards, reflecting his impact on both state and national levels.
Reflecting on his career, Schopp stated, “It has been a privilege to serve and witness the growth of our organization. I am proud of our accomplishments and confident in Nadine Patterson’s ability to lead the Bureau into its next chapter.”
As Schopp retires, Nadine E. Patterson will assume the role of Executive Director effective April 1, 2026. Patterson, who has served as Deputy Executive Director of Civil Practice since 2021, brings a wealth of experience and a strong vision for the future. Her leadership has been instrumental in expanding the Bureau’s reach and developing programs that further its mission. Patterson’s appointment comes after an exhaustive, nationwide search, which began in 2025.
Patterson remarked, “I am honored to follow in David’s footsteps and continue the legacy of providing essential legal services to our community. All of us at Legal Aid are looking forward to building on the strong foundation laid by David.”
A celebration to honor Schopp’s remarkable career and contributions will be held March 31, 2026, inviting community members, colleagues, and friends to join in recognizing his legacy and commitment to justice.
